Of the total of 99 children who died from these diseases where
the exact nature of the food given was ascertained, only 11, or 12
per cent., were nursed by the mother without the addition of any
other food, and of these six died in the first three months.
In 60, or 60 per cent., cows' milk, either alone or with condensed
milk or farinaceous food, was given; while in 23, or 23
per cent., condensed milk only was given. In only one case, a
child of under three months, had farinaceous food only been given;
while in 16 cases no information could be obtained (three in Clapham,
one in Putney, six in Streatham, two in Tooting, and 13 in
