Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
Samples of Milk have been taken on delivery at the public
institutions, railway stations, and at four private houses in the
Borough on receipt of complaint from the occupiers. All these
samples were returned as genuine with the exception of two obtained
at the railway station.
The old system of forwarding Milk in unsealed churns still
prevails and in no single instance during the year has the Inspector
observed during his frequent visits to the various railway stations a
churn which was adequately sealed.
The sealing of churns is recommended by the leading Dairy
Farmers' Association, who printed in the form of a leaflet the correspondence
which passed between the Board of Trade, the Railway Companies
Association and themselves.

149 samples of Milk were obtained on Sundays in the early
morning and at mid-day, 13 of which or 8.7 per cent, were reported
adulterated, compared with 11, or 13.6 per cent, in 1904.
The adulteration of Butter, judged by the percentage of adulteration
reported, seems to have been gradually increasing during the past
three years.
The return of samples submitted show that 8.9 per cent, were
adulterated, the figures for 1904 and 1903 being 7.2 and 4.4 respectively.
The adulteration of Butter is still solely confined to the substitution of
Margarine, and in no case has a certificate been returned showing that
water has been present in more than the legal quantity.
