41. With the view of finding work for the unemployed the Borough Council decided to put in hand the following works :—

The Guardians also provided 549 days'work for the unemployed
on their land at Tooting Home.
42. The Joint-Committee received and inquired into 909 applications,
and offered work to 357, of whom 291 accepted the offer—the
total number of days work provided being 12,831.
Some of the men were employed on works of the Central
Committee at Tooting Common, Totterdown, Long Grove Asylum,
Hollesley Bay, Garden City and Green Park. A fuller report as to the
work of the Joint-Committee has been issued separately.
43. The subject of the proposed erection of a new Mortuary for
Mortua Putney, Tooting and Wandsworth Wards has again
Coroner's been considered and, in connection therewith, the want
Court. 0f a coroner's Court, and the County Council has been
informed that this Council proposes to erect the proposed Mortuary on
the site of Nos. 2, 4 & 6, Ram Square, and asked to erect the proposed
Coroner's Court on land in Red Lion Street, Wandsworth, acquired by
the County Council in connection with the widening for the proposed
tramways there. The proposal is still under the consideration of the
County Council.
44. The provisions of this Act enable local authorities to make
Shop Hours' closing orders, fixing the hours on the several days of
Act. the week at which either throughout the area of the
local authority, or in any specified part thereof, all shops or shops of
any specified class are to be closed for serving customers. The hours
fixed may be as early as 1 p.m. on one day in the week, but on the
remaining days shall not be earlier than 7 p.m. Closing orders do not
come into force until confirmed by the Secretary of State, and are not
