Parish of Wandsworth. 129
hot summer months from Diarrhoea, as.many medical men
do not certify the deaths as due to Diarrhoea, but to
Gastro-Enteritis or to simple Enteritis. In future all
these diseases will be grouped under two main heads,
Epidemic Diarrhoea, or Enteritis, and a comparison of
these in future years will give a more correct estimate of
the increase or decrease of this, one of the most fatal
diseases among infants.
During 1900, in addition to the 62 deaths from
Diarrhoea, there were 31 deaths from Enteritis, 20 of
these occurring in children under one year, making a total
of 93 from the two diseases, and consequently increasing
the death-rate from these to 1.41 per 1,000.
34 deaths occurred from this disease, compared
influenza. with 22 and 23 in 1898. Two of
these occurred in the Middlesex Lunatic Asylum, two in
the Royal Hospital for Incurables, and one in the Prison,
while two occurred in outlying institutions, giving a
corrected total of 31, compared with 23 last year. The
death-rate was .47 per 1000, compared with .46 in 1899.
The next table shows the death-rates per 1,000 from
seven of these zymotic diseases, including those in outlying
institutions for the years 1898, 1899, and 1900:—
