Small Pox.
No case has been reported during the year.
This is the fourth year during which there
has been none. Only four deaths were recorded in the
whole of London from this cause.
Diphtheria.
This disease was less prevalent in 1900 than
in either of the two preceding years, but
excepting those two years, the number of cases notified
was greater than in any year of the past decade. There
were 128 cases notified, a fall of 70 compared with 1899.
The proportion of the population attacked by it was 2.41
per thousand in 1899 it was 4.0 per thousand, and in
1898, 3.66. Furthermore, it is seen from the Table above,
that by far the largest number of cases were notified in
the first two months of the year; 24 in January, and 17
in February, so that the epidemic of 1899 has evidently
for the present spent its force. In 1900, there has not
been the very marked rise that is usually found in the
last quarter of the year, though the cases notified in that
quarter were in excess of those in the two preceding
ones.
