Medical Officers of Health Annual Report.
Births. During the year, 5,754 births were registered,
2,951 of males and 2,803 of females, an increase of 209,
compared with last year. In Table I is shown the
number of births in each sub-district, as well as the
birth-rate and the rate of natural increase.

The birth-rate was 26.51 per 1,000, a decrease of
.17 compared with 1899, but is .19 per 1,000 above
the mean rate for the last 10 years, which was 26.32.
There is considerable difference in the birth-rates of
the several parishes, Tooting being 47.8, the highest, and
Strcatham 23.8, the lowest. The birth-rate for the
Metropolis as a whole was, for the year 1900, 28.5, or
1.99 per 1,000 above the rate for this district.
The natural increase, or the excess of births over
deaths was 2,612, and the rate of increase 11.89.
The average for the preceding 10 years was 12.23,
or .34 above the rate for 1900.
