The birth-rate calculated from the total births registered
and the foregoing estimated population was 34.51 per
1,000 persons living, as compared with 34.6 in the
previous year. The birth-rate for the whole of London
during last year was 32.3 per 1,000, being the lowest on
record since the year 1850. The natural increase of the
population, or excess of births over deaths was 4,498
and the rate of natural increase 17.4 per 1,000.
Deaths. The total deaths registered during the
year numbered 4,398,—2,254 of males and
2,144 of females. The number of deaths and the deathrates
of the several sub-districts are compared in the
following- table:—
