DEATHS.
The number of deaths of Stoke Newington residents registered
during 1931 was 655 as compared with 613 in 1930, making the
annual death rate 12.7 per 1,000 population for 1931 as compared
with 12.2 for 1930.
Table I. shows the causes of death at the different periods of
life at which they occurred.
The principal causes of death in their order of severity were :
Heart Disease 142, Cancer 99, Tuberculosis (all forms 59, a id
Pneumonia (all forms) 41.
The average yearly death rate of the Borough during the
previous five years was 12.2 per 1,000 population, so that the death
rate for 1931 is seen to be slightly above this average.
Of the total 655 Stoke Newington deaths which occured
during the year, no less that 350 took place in public institutions ;
this equals a proportion of 53.4 % of the total deaths.
Comparing this table with the corresponding table of the
preceding year, the following facts are noteworthy: the increase
in the deaths from Heart Disease, Cancer and Tuberculosis, and a
decrease in those from Pneumonia.
