SUMMARY OF VITAL AND MORTAL STATISTICS, etc.,
FOR 1917.
Area of Borough—4,080-4 statute acres (inclusive of land and inland
water, but exclusive of tidal water 82.1 and foreshore 31.1
statute acres respectively), divided into 5 Registration SubDistricts,
4 Parliamentary Divisions, and 9 Wards. The Parliamentary
Divisions and Wards are not co-extensive but the
Registration Sub-Districts and the Wards are.
Civil Population—estimated 1917—272,038 (males 117,457, and
females 154,581).
*Density—66.7 persons per statute acre (inclusive of land and
inland water, but exclusive of tidal water and foreshore).
Births (uncorrected)—6,869 being 25.2 per 1,000 population.
Deaths (corrected)—4,168 being 15.3 per 1,000 population.
Infantile Mortality (corrected)—516 deaths (corrected) under 1 year,
being 75.1 per 1,000 total (uncorrected) births, or 93'9 per
1,000 total (corrected) births.
Zymotic Death-rate (corrected)—1.1 per 1,000 population (total
corrected zymotic deaths, 295).
* The densities (based upon the estimated civil populations) vary in the
different Registration Sub-Districts as follows—Lambeth Church (354.3
acres) 118.5, Kennington (398.3 acres) 109.02, Stockwell (583 acres) 97.7,
Brixton (1026.6 acres) 69.2, and Norwood 1718-2 acres) 34.1 per statute
acre respectively.
