Distribution of Welfare Foods
There was a decrease in the issue of nutrients during the year as compared
with 1956. So far as National Dried Milk is concerned this is no
doubt accounted for by the increase in price, as from April, from 10½d..
to 2s. 4d. per tin. As from November, the Minister of Health adopted
the recommendation of the Joint Sub-Committee on Welfare Foods that
the supply of welfare orange juice to children should be discontinued from
their second birthday. Children had previously been eligible up to the
age of five years.
The arrangements for issuing welfare foods were substantially the
same as in the previous year. The W.V.S. Centre at Muswell Hill closed
down at the end of the year owing to ill-health of the member who had
been operating it.
