It was originally intended to take steps to obtain a local order making acute rheumatism compulsorily notifiable, but following discussion with officers of the Ministry of Health it was decided during the year not to proceed with this application since the present scheme appeared to bring under the care of the supervisory centre all children in the Area needing treatment.

The Handicapped Pupil
A Handicapped Pupil is by definition one who is in need of Special
Educational Treatment. For the thinly populated rural areas the only
possible provision for such children is residential schooling, but in the
densely peopled Metropolitan Area residential provision is an expensive
alternative to day special schools. In this Area there appears to be a
sufficient number of children of junior school age to justify the establishment
of a day school for partially deaf children, which unit could
be attached to an ordinary school.
The proposal to provide facilities for the treatment of children
suffering from cerebral palsy at the Vale Road Special School for
Physically Handicapped Children will need extra accommodation for
the larger number expected and for the expansion of therapy facilities
following the appointment by the North East Metropolitan Regional
