SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
The general sanitation of the area is maintained at a high
level. Drainage and sewerage, public cleansing, sanitary
inspection and the abatement of nuisances are all effective in
maintaining a healthy environment. The public water supply—
an item of immense importance to the public health—is excellent
in quality and so far unrestricted in quantity, in spite of the prolonged
drought.
The population of this Borough owes a great debt of gratitude
to the late Sir Alexander Houston, for many years Director of
Water Examination to the Metropolitan Water Board. His great
scientific ability and untiring zeal in the discharge of his duties
