Births.—Twelve hundred and one babies were born in
Hornsey, the birth rate being 133 per 1,000 population—a slight
decrease on the figure (13'4) for the previous year. Forty-eight
of the births were illegitimate.
Eleven hundred and sixty-four births (including 265 transferred
from other districts and 136 transferred to other districts)
were notified to the Medical Officer of Health under the Notification
of Births Acts. These figures include 31 stillbirths, of which
11 were transferred from other districts and 4 were transferred to
other districts. One hundred and forty-eight un-notified births
were extracted from the Registrar's returns.
Stillbirths.—The Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1926,
which came into force on the 1st July, 1927, requires the registration
of stillbirths with the Registrar of Births and Deaths.
Fourteen stillbirths were registered between 1st July and 30th
December.
The excess of births over deaths for the year was 189.
Deaths.—The total number of deaths during 1927 was 1,012
—the death-rate being 11'2 per 1,000 population. The rate for
1926 was 10.6.

Causes of death.—The most frequent causes of death, set out as percentages of the total deaths, were as follows : —

Table B. on page 36 shows the number of deaths due to various
causes during the past seven years. Deaths from pulmonary
tuberculosis have slightly decreased in number, and deaths from
pneumonia and bronchitis also show a decline.
Infant mortality rate.—There were 46 deaths of infants
under one year of age, including 9 of illegitimate infants, in 1927.
This is equal to an infant mortality rate of 38.3 per 1,000 births—
the lowest figure in the history of the Borough. The infant
mortality rate of illegitimate children was 191. The infant
mortality rate for England and Wales was 69.
