During the year 1,837 visits have been made to the shops.
In a few instances it was found that the necessary notices
under the Acts were not exhibited. The shopkeeper's attention
was called to this, and on a further visit being made shortly afterwards
it was found that the requisite notices were exhibited.
The following Orders have been made on the petition of the
shop-keepers of the particular trades to which the Orders refer:—
"The Hornsey Dealers in Books Order," dated 19th January,
1914, whereby shops to which these orders apply are
exempted from the provisions of Section 4 of the Shops
Act, 1912, relating to the closing of shops for the Weekly
Half-Holiday.
"The Highgate Grocers, Provision Merchants and Oil and
Italian Warehousemen's Weekly Half-Holiday Order,"
dated 20th April, 1914, whereby the provisions of Section
4 of the Shops Act, 1912, are extended to all shops in
which these trades are carried on and which are situate in
a district or area comprising the Highgate Ward.
"The Fabrics (Misdescription) Act, 1913.— The Secretary
of State wrote on the 21st January, 1914: —
"I am directed to enclose herewith, for the information of
the Borough Council, copies of the Fabrics (Misdescription) Act,
1913, and of the Regulations made by the Secretary of State
thereunder on the 20th instant.
The Act prohibits the sale of textile fabrics under misleading
descriptions in respect of non-inflammability from fire. For this
purpose section 1 provides that any person who sells or has in his
possession for sale any textile fabric to which the quality of noninflammability
from fire is attributed, by description, advertisement,
verbal representation, or otherwise, shall, unless such
textile fabric conforms to the standard of non-inflammability prescribed
by regulations of the Secretary of State, be liable to the
penalties mentioned in the section.
