Municipal Laboratory.—During the year 640 specimens
were examined from patients who were, or were suspected to be
suffering from Diphtheria. Of these 540 were specimens taken
at the Hospital, and 100 specimens were sent in by Medical men
practising in the district.
There were 45 specimens sent by Medical practitioners for
examination from suspected cases of Tuberculosis, and 28 miscellaneous
specimens were received and examined.
There were also 51 specimens examined from children suffering
from Ringworm who were scholars at the public elementary
schools.
Altogether 764 specimens were examined in the Bacteriological
Laboratory, of which 173 were received from Medical men practising
in the district. Last year there were 90 specimens received
from the Medical practitioners.
There were 1,860 samples of sewage and effluent analysed and
reported on.
There were also 36 samples of drinking water examined, and
in every case the sample was found to be quite satisfactory.
Diseases of Animals Acts.—There were 3 outbreaks of
Glanders during the year, and 8 horses were destroyed. The
Council paid £89 to the owners as compensation, in accordance
with the terms of the Glanders Order, for the loss of these horses.
There was one outbreak of Swine Fever, and 11 pigs died
from the disease, or were killed by the owners.
There were 4 certificates for the movement of swine issued.
