The average annual death-rate from consumption of the lungs
during the 13 years 1893-1905 has been 0.653 per 1,000 persons
living.
During this period the district has changed very considerably,
parts that were quite rural 13 years ago now being covered with
houses.
Now, density of population has an important bearing on the
mortality from consumption, and, when we consider that in 1891
Hornsey contained only 8 persons per acre, and these had increased
by 1901 to 25 persons per acre, and in 1905 to nearly 30 persons
per acre, we get some idea of the changes that have transformed
a district once largely rural into one now entirely urban in
character.
The case of Muswell Hill is an extreme one, but in this Ward
the number of persons per acre has increased from 5 persons per
acre in 1898 to 16 persons per acre in 1905, i.e., in 7 years the
population has become more than treble what it was.

The following table gives the death-rates from all forms of tuberculosis in a number of towns where the population is approximately equal in number to that of Hornsey:—
