increase is the same as in the intercensal period 1881-1891. Calculated
in this way, the estimated population of Hornsey at the
middle of 1904 was 81,221.
Owing to the extensive building operations that have gone on
during the last few years in the districts surrounding London, it
is considered that the Registrar General's method will not give a
sufficiently accurate estimate of the population, and that a nearer
approximation to the true figure will be got by basing the estimate
on the number of inhabited houses. This estimate assumes that
the average number of persons per inhabited house is the same
now as in 1901, and on this basis the population of Hornsey at
the middle of 1904 would be 84,227. At the date of the census
the population was 72,056, so that the population of the Borough
is estimated to have increased by 12,171 persons during the 3¼
years from April 1st, 1901, to June 30th, 1904.

The land area of the Borough is 2,863.4 acres, so that the
density of population is equal to 29.4 persons per acre.
