The cases of measles recorded have risen from 104 in April to 170,
and the deaths registered from 4 to 17—all but one being children
under five years of age. Scarlet fever has risen from 38 cases in April
to 52, with 27 registered deaths, the largest number registered in any
May for 15 years, with the exception of the very unhealthy year 1863,
when, at this season, after a droughty April, small-pox and scarlet fever
both prevailed excessively.
Eain has only fallen on six days, and to a total amount of 0-69 inch.
During the nine weeks since March 27, only 1.09 inch has fallen, being
distributed over only 11 days out of the 63. A great part, moreover,
namely, 0.53 inch, fell on only 2 days, namely, 0'30 inch on the 11th of
May and 0.23 inch on the 13th of May.
On Sunday the 29th, I seized, at a licensed slaughter house in the
George's Road, where beasts are killed for the dead meat market, the
carcass of a much diseased and emaciated cow, which had been sent up
from Hatfield dead, and without the pass necessary for transmitting a
live beast. It had been dressed at the slaughter house in the same
way as other carcasses prepared for the market. Being unfit for human
food, it was destroyed the next morning by order of the magistrate
sitting at Clerkenwell. The Sanitary Committee will, doubtless, deal
with this case according to its judgment.
