MOETALITY AND SICKNESS.
The number of deaths registered in Islington (omitting those of nonresidents
occurring in the Small Pox and Fever Hospitals, and in the West
London Union Workhouse) were 4370. To these must be added 248, our
proportion (as calculated upon the population) of the deaths occurring in
the various Hospitals, Lunatic Asylums, Prisons, &c, in other parts of
London—a number, however, as I have shown before, probably in excess of
the true number for which we are bound to take credit. With this
addition our deaths become raised to 4618. Our population in the middle
of 1870 was probably about 208,709 persons, and thus our estimated
death-rate comes to be for that year, 221 per 10,000 persons living. The
death rate of London at large, as calculated by the Registrar General, was
241 per 10,000. Of the deaths registered, 2,105 were deaths of males, and
2,265 of females. Of the 4,370 deaths registered here, less than half,
namely, 2,018 were of children under 5 years of age.
