submitting to your attention and thought the customary tables of mortality and
sickness, associated with a few simple comments which naturally result from their
consideration.
MORTALITY.
2. Two thousand six hundred and seventy persons, of whom 1310 were males and
1360 females, died in our parish between January 1st, and December 31st, 1859. As
usual, I exclude from this enumeration all strangers dying in hospitals, as well as the
children of the Clerkenwell Infant Establisment which has been located in Islington.
To this number, however, must be added 141, our estimated proportion of deaths in
hospitals, lying-in institutions and lunatic asylums in London, making a total of
2811. The mortality (estimated in the same manner) of 1857 exceeded that of
1856 by 120; and the mortality of 1858 exceeded that of 1857 by 235: the mortality
of last year, however, only exceeded that of 1858 by 20. As it can scarcely be
imagined that the population has only increased in a similar ratio, we must, I think,
consider that the death-rate of 1859 is to be viewed in a favourable light.
3. The Births registered (and a varying number always escape registration) amounted to 4997, viz.:—2595 males and 2402 females, as represented in the following table:—
