MARRIAGES.
Marriages, 3,188; Marriage Rate, 19.9.— The number of
persons married was 6,376, as contrasted with 5,968 in the preceding year,
which is an increase of 408. and the marriage rate per thousand inhabitants
was 19.59, as compared with 17.98 in 1913. This rate is the highest experienced
since 1865, when it was 19.77 per thousand inhabitants. In the first quarter of
the year the rate was only 11.20 per thousand, which figure rose to 19.17 in the
second quarter, and further increased to 23.72 in the third quarter; while in the
fourth quarter it was as high as 24.26. This increase was most probably due
to the large number of war marriages that undoubtedly occurred, not only in
Islington, but throughout England; especially was this indicated in the fourth
quarter which showed an increase of 6.58 in the rate per thousand of the
inhabitants, while the actual number of persons married showed an increase of
424 (or 212 marriages), as contrasted with the corresponding quarter of 1913.
Only twice since 1841 has the marriage rate been so high. (Vide Table VIII.)
The following statement shows the figures for the decennial average
1902-1911, and for 1912, 1913 and 1914.
