Sanitary Improvements. —During the year 78 notices have been served for the abatement
of nuisances, 172 workshops have been cleansed and limewhited, 33 w.c.'s have been
provided (22 for males and 11 for females at various factories and workshops; 141 foul w.c.'s
have been cleansed, 61 w.c.'s, which were found to be defective, have been amended ; 26 water
supplies to flush cisterns have been provided; also 97 other improvements were carried out
under my supervision.
Bakehouses.— These numbered 236, and received 481 inspections, and most of them
were found at the time of my visits in a clean and satisfactory condition. At the end of the
year there were 88 bakehouses in use above ground, 85 below ground, whilst 63 were not used.
There was a decrease of 1 from the previous year.
I have notified through you to H.M. Inspector of Factories the names and addresses
of 33 factories and workshops in the Borough where young persons under the age of 18 years,
were employed, and where the abstract of the Factory Act was not affixed, also 3 new factories
have been reported in accordance with the Home Office Memorandum of March, 1912.
During the year 61 workshops have been added to the Register, whilst 47 have been
removed, so that at the present time there are 512 workshops containing 729 workrooms, and
75 outworkers' premises new on the register.

To the Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,
I have the honour to submit to you a report of my observations on the state of labour
and the conditions of Workshops in the Borough of Islington from the time I succeeded Miss
Davies as Sanitary Inspector of Workshops in August, 1914, until December 31st, 1914.
Last September, October and November I drew up an interim report on the extraordinary
state of affairs caused by the outb eak of war, and my present report is partially
anticipated by my previous remarks.

Since August 1 have made 699 inspections of premises, and 915 calls and re-inspections. The inspections and re-inspections are as follows :—
