Sanitation.—Seven hundred and eighty-nine sanitary defects were discovered,
of which 266 related to uncleanliness, 9 to insufficiency of ventilation,
7 to overcrowding, and 165 to various other nuisances. There was an absence
of dustbins, or a defect in them, in 27 instances. In 27 places the W.C. accommodation
was insufficient; in 202 cases they were foul, and in 92 they were
unsuitable or defective. In 13 instances separate accommodation had to be
provided for the sexes. In 26 a water supply was required and supplied.
Altogether 758 of the sanitary defects had been remedied at the close of
the year.
One hundred and four nuisances were discovered in the homes of outworkers,
whence 31 cases of infectious diseases had been notified.
