Work at the Disinfecting Station.—The work at the disinfecting
station was heavier than at any period since it was erected, for no less than
87,764 large articles were disinfected, as contrasted with 17,240 in 1895, when
the station was opened. The figures have increased year by year, but particularly
since 1908; it is, therefore, apparent that very considerable use is made
of the plant.
The disinfections included 66,454 articles removed from infected homes, as
well as 21,310 articles, mostly second-hand garments, forwarded for disinfection
by a large firm of dealers in such apparel. The description of the former are
set out in the statement given below. It may be mentioned, however, that the
return does not include the garments of verminous school children, which were
disinfected while they receive their baths.
