Houses Infected.—Enquiry elicited the fact that the 550 cases were
notified from 473 houses, and that in 427 houses only one case was known, in
34 houses there were two cases, in 8 houses three cases, in 2 houses four
cases, in 1 house five cases, and in 1 house eight cases. Ten cases occurred
in Public Institutions, as seen in the subsequent tabulated statement.
As nearly all of these cases were removed to hospital, it is clear that the
spread of the disease to others must have been very largely prevented. For
instance, it is hardly possible for 427 cases to remain in 427 separate houses
for several weeks without spreading the disease to other children in the house.
