Shops, etc., Inspection of.—There are some 238 shops where meat foods are sold,,
including butchers, provision dealers, etc., 5 meat, etc., stalls, 9 premises where meats are
prepared for human food (sausage factories, etc.), 104 fish shops, 4 fish stalls, 211 fruit shops,
and about 20 fruit stalls. To these a total of 12,011 visits have been recorded by your inspector,
independent of the visits of the 14 district inspectors on Saturday evenings and Sunday
mornings, of which I have no particulars—made up as follows, viz. :—
To Butcher's, &c., Shops 5,803 visits.
To Sausage Factories, &c. 149 ,,
To Butcher's Stalls 469 ,,
To Fish Shops 1,458 „
To Fish Stalls .539 ,,
To Fruit Shops 2,502 „
To Fruit Stalls 1,091 „
Total 12,011
The quality and condition of the foodstuffs generally, coming under observation
during such visits has been very satisfactory; this is borne out by the comparatively small
amount of foodstuffs dealt with as unsound, which is fully set forth in Table " B " of this
report given below, the bulk of which was examined by request and surrendered. A reference
to this table shows the amount and particulars of the unsound foods dealt with from shops
etc.
