Cowhouses.—There are only 5 cowhouses now on the register, one of
which has not been occupied during the year, and to them 56 visits were paid.
They are well conducted, although on one occasion some decomposing feeding
stuffs were found in one of them. These were, however, speedily removed on
attention being drawn to them. During his visits the inspector discovered
three cows suffering from tuberculosis, one of which had her udder affected,
while two suffered with generalised tuberculosis. Now, if these cows had
belonged to a country farmer, it is quite probable that the owners would have
continued to send their milk to London, whereas being in Islington the cows
were at once removed from the cowsheds and slaughtered. This is one of the
reasons why the Medical Officer of Health regrets the great decrease in the
number of cowkeepers in the borough, which in twenty years has fallen from
31 to 4. Soon there will be none.

The following statement shows the number of cowhouses licensed in the borough in each year since 1892:—
