ARTIZANS AND OTHER DWELLINGS.
Under this heading are included, not only houses or blocks of dwellings
devoted to the artizan classes, but also to those that are occupied by the people
of the clerical and similar classes. They are steadily increasing in number.
I here are now some 442 dwellings, containing 5,109 separate flats or
tenements, in the borough, and they are occupied for the most part by the
working classes. As remarked last year, some of the older buildings are not
nearly so fully occupied as they used to be in former days; partly because some
of them have shown distinct deterioration, while others have become more or
less out of date in comparison with the more modern erections, which provide
not only more light, but more household conveniences.
In the Table which is appended herewith are given the names of some of the principal dwellings in the borough:—
