Sanitary Improvements.— During the year 132 notices have been served for the abatement
of nuisances, 148 workshops have been cleansed and lime-whited, 6 w.c's. have been
provided (4 for males and 2 for females) at various workshops, whilst 329 other improvements
were carried out under our supervision. Also 30 workroom cards were distributed
showing the cubic capacity and the number of employées allowed in each workroom. There
were in addition 40 water supplies provided. Three drains which were found to be in a
foul and defective condition were transferred to the district Inspector.
Bakehouses.— During the year 208 inspections have been made to bakehouses besides
a number of other calls to same. I regret to state that owing to my serious illness I was
unable to record a larger number of visits to them, but hope in my next report to give a
better account. At the end of the year there were 101 bakehouses in use above ground, 94
below ground and 54 not in use, making a total of 249.
There has been reported through you to H.M. Inspector of Factories, as required
by the Public Health Act, 1891, the addresses of 30 workshops where young persons under
the age of 18 years were employed and where the abstract of the Factory Act was not
affixed.
Register.— During the year 60 workshops have been added to the Register, whilst
53 have been removed, so that at the present time there are 942 workshops containing 1,331
workrooms and 71 outworkers' premises now on the register.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
GEORGE WEST,
Sanitary Inspector of Workshops, etc.
