Sanitation.—1,403 sanitary defects were discovered, of which 465 related
to want of cleanliness, 21 to want of ventilation, 18 to overcrowding, 50 to
insufficient, or want of, drainage to the floors, and 345 to other nuisances. In
54 instances dustbins were wanting or defective, in 9 the w.c. accommodation
was insufficient, in 247 it was foul, in 190 it was unsuitable or defective, and
in 4 the sexes had not been provided with separate accommodation.
Of these sanitary defects, 1,374 had been remedied at the close of the
year. In addition to these, nuisances were found in 111 instances in the
homes of outworkers, from which 47 cases of infectious diseases were
reported.
As showing the volume of work that has been done in factories, workshops,
and workplaces since 1896, it may be said that 16,963 more or less serious
nuisances, in addition to very many of minor importance, have been discovered
and remedied. Their nature is set out in the following table, which
has now been published tor a number of years.
