175 [1911
There is considerable difficulty in dealing with these notifications owing to
the number of certificates received from various officials in dealing with the
same individuals, as well as to the wanderings of the individuals themselves,
and their "in and out" vagaries, in the workhouses and workhouse infirmaries.

The notifications are sent to the Medical Officer of Health on four different forms, A, B, C and D, of which the following is a summary:—

Notifications received.
Form A. Medical Officers of Poor Law Institutions496
Form B. Medical Officers of Poor Law Districts250
Form C. Superintending Officers of Public Institutions593
Form D. Relieving Officers of Poor Law Districts2
Total Notifications1,341

Of the total number of notifications received (1,341) during the year under
the Regulations, 460, or 34.3 per cent., related to the transfer of patients from
one institution to another. Thus from Holborn Workhouse, Shepherdess Walk,
which is without this borough, 318 cases were transferred to Holborn Infirmary
within this borough; 123 cases were transferred from the Islington Workhouse
to the Islington Infirmary, both within this borough; and 19 cases were
transferred from the Cornwallis Road Workhouse to the Islington Infirmary,
both within this borough. From this resume it is apparent that a large
percentage was of little or no utility from a public health point of view, which
is the identical commentary that the Medical Officer of Health made with
respect to the returns of 1910.
In the following statement the officials from whom the certificates were
received last year, are shown:—
