First Quarter.—There were 336 cases notified, and these equalled an
annual attack-rate of 4.11 per 1,000 of the population. They were 156 below
the decennial average for this quarter.
Second Quarter.—The number of cases reported was 313, or 156 less
than the decennial average. They represented an annual attack-rate of 3.82
per 1,000 inhabitants.
Third Quarter.—458 cases were notified, or 120 less than the average of
the corresponding quarters of the ten years 1901-10. They equalled an
annual attack-rate of 5.60 per 1,000 of the population.
Fourth Quarter.—As many as 652 cases were recorde I, representing an
annual attack-rate of 7.97 per 1,000 inhabitants. They were, however, only
10 above the annual average of the fourth quarter of the preceding ten years.
High though the rate was, it was lower than the aggregate rate of the
Encircling Boroughs, and only slightly above the attack-rate of the County of
London.

The following statement gives the particulars for each quarter:—

FATALITY FROM THE INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
By the term fatality is meant the percentage proportion of the deaths to
the attacks. Thus, if there were 100 attacks and 5 deaths, the fatality would
be 5.0
The fatality, which was 5.9 per 100 cases, was again low, being 2.7 below
the average of the twenty years 1891-1910. It was, however, 0.7 above that
of the preceding year. It is a singular fact that as the cases of illnesses have
decreased so nearly always has the fatality, although not always to the same
extent. This may be seen on the chart on the opposite page. It is not easy
to understand the reason why the disease is not so virulent when the cases
are few, but that it is generally the case is apparent on studying the curves.
