DISEASES OF THE RESPIRATORY ORGANS.
These diseases include Bronchitis, Pneumonia, Pleurisy and Asthma, and
taken together caused 855 deaths, of 17.8 per cent. of the total deaths
registered in 1911. They were equal to a death-rate of 2.61 per 1,000 of the
population. During the ten years 1901-10 they were credited with 10,038 deaths
out of 50,275 registered in Islington, or 19.9 per cent. Thus nearly one in
every five persons dies from them. Of late years there has been a decrease
in their number. Indeed, as shown in the report for 1910 they have fallen
from 0,268 in the quinquennium 1891-95 to 4,934 in that of 1900-10, which is
a decrease of 21.3 per cent.
