Pulmonary Phthisis.—This disease, which is popularly known as
"consumption," was responsible for the deaths of 379 persons, of whom 223
were males and 156 females. The deaths among males were 50 below the
average of the preceding ten years, and those among females were 33 below
it, while the total deaths were 83 below the average of 462, which obtained
during the years 1901-10.
The death-rate from phthisis was equal to l.16 per 1,000 of the population,
or 0.23 below the decennial rate. The death-rate among males was con.
siderably more than among females, the relative figures being 1.43 per 1,000
males, and 0.91 per 1,000 females. Each death-rate was, however, below the
mean decennial rate, that for males showing a decrease of 0.24 per 1,000, and
that for females 0.13.

It is extremely satisfactory to note that the death-rate from pulmonary phthisis was the lowest hitherto recorded in Islington.
