The figures show that there has been a slight decrease in the total number
of deaths from this group of diseases. It was chiefly due to the lesser number
of deaths registered from tuberculous diseases, (vide Table LXXX.)
cancer or malignant DISEASE.
Cancer or malignant disease caused 329 deaths, of which 143 were those
of males and 186 of females; and they were in the proportion of 1.0 to every
thousand of the population, which is practically the death-rate which has
obtained during the last five years. It is a melancholy fact that this disease
shows no signs of decreasing; indeed, on the contrary it has increased, as the
following figures demonstrate:—
