It is very apparent from these figures that the borough has not as yet
returned to its normal state with respect to this ailment, which not only directly,
but also indirectly, carries off so many persons—how many it would be
difficult to state. Indeed, in 1899 it was shown in these reports that in the
fourth quarter alone of that year there was an excess of 248 deaths from
diseases of the nervous, respiratory, and circulatory systems, as compared with
the average number registered in the corresponding quarters of the preceding
five years. Let us hope that its present undoubted tendency to decrease may
be the forerunner of its entire extinction.
