not a third of that of to-day. Since 1886, if wo analyse the deaths in quinquennial
periods, we find that from 1886 to 1890 there were 254 deaths; from
1891 to 1895, 332 ; from 1896 to 1900, 201 ; from 1901 to 1905, 166 ; and from
1906 to 1910, 127. Thus we see that from 1895 to the end of 1910 there has
been a persistent decrease in the mortality.
The particulars of the disease in the various districts are given in the
Table which follows:—

DIPHTHERIA.
The return of 34 deaths from this disease must be considered satisfactory,
particularly as following the low return of 31 in 1909. In 1908, 60 deaths were
registered, in 1907 42, and in 1906 32. Thus for some years there has been
a very small mortality compared with what it used to be from this formerly
very fatal disease.
When the return of the past years are examined, we find that from 1886
to 1890, 311 deaths were registered; from 1891 to 1895,842; from 1896 to
1900, 678; from 1901 to 1905, 343; and from 1906 to the end of last year 199.
These figures show that ever since the 1891-1895 quinquennium there has
been a very steady fall in the number of deaths ; indeed the decrease from the
average of that quinquennium to the end of last year was as much as 76'4
per cent,
