DISTRICT INSPECTION.
The work performed by the district inspectors represents as usual a very
large number of inspections; indeed, the total inspections and visits to premises
numbered 66,365, and related to 5,576 houses in which 17,105 sanitary improvements
of one kind and another were effected. The premises visited
included ice-cream shops, factories, dairies and milkshops, stables, yards,
manure depots, vacant land, passages and courts, urinals attached to publichouses,
and premises for which certificates under the Customs and Inland
Revenue Acts were required, as well as those for which certificates as to the
water supply were demanded. They also made 252 smoke observations; and
in addition they inspected many thousands of shops, stalls, and markets on Saturday
evenings for the detection of unsound food, which, however, are not set out
separately in the returns.
House to House Inspections.—934 houses were inspected as the
result of house to house visitation. Much trouble has again been experienced
in this class of work, especially where it happens that the houses are owned
by the people living in them. They resent the interference of an inspector,
no doubt owing to the expense he may be compelled to put them to in causing
them to amend sanitary defects.
There was an increase of 151 in the number of house to house visitations,
although it is considerably below the number inspected in 1908. The fact is
that owing to the large increase of the duties devolving on the inspectors, it
is not possible for them to pay that attention to house to house inspection
that is necessary.
