Illegitimate Births.- There were 240 illegitimate births registered during
the year, or 10 fewer than in 1909 It is interesting to note that from 1851
to 1860 the average number of illegitimate births in Islington was 133; in the
succeeding decade, 1861 to 1870, it was 265; from 1871 to 1880 342, from
1881 to 1890 347, and from 1891 to 1900 271 There has, therefore, been a
very considerable decrease in the last decennial period, indeed it amounted
to 756

in Islington during the last 70 years
Notification of Births.—The Notification of Births Act was primarily
passed with a view to the prevention of the deaths of newly born children,
which has been for many years a blot on our boasted civilization It is true
that the infantile mortality in England and Wales, and, indeed, in the United
Kingdom, is not nearly so high as that experienced in other countries, but
nevertheless in view of the fact that the birth rate was an ever decreasing
