Registers.— There were at the end of the year 4,542 workshops on the
registers, as against 4,370 in 1909. They include 530 workshops where men,
and 785 workshops where women are employed, and also 114 laundries, 253
bakehouses, 746 kitchens of restaurants, eating houses, or of places where food
is prepared, and 2,114 outworkers' premises, which have increased considerably,
and at the end of the year showed an increase of 264 on the return for 1909.
The following tabular statement gives the figures for the year as well as
for 1909.

Sanitation.— The sanitary defects or nuisances discovered were 1,638
in number, of which 4,490 were due to want of cleanliness, 19 to insufficient
ventilation.'26 to overcrowding, 113 to insufficient or want of surface drainage,
and 418 to other nuisances. Dustbins were wanting in eight instances, and
defective in 23. In 31 cases the w.c. accommodation was insufficient, in 302
it was foul, in 200 it was unsuitable or defective, and in 8 separate accommodation
had not been provided for the separate sexes.
At the close of the year 1,600 of these defects had been remedied.
There were also 70 defects discovered in the homes of outworkers, as compared
with 119 in 1909.

is to be seen.
