MARRIAGES
There were 5,740 persons married during the year, as compared with an
average of 5,906 in the ten years preceding The marriage rate was equal to
17.50 per 1,000 of the estimated population, as against 1778 in the period just
mentioned Thus there is a decrease of 166 on the mean of the decennium and
in the number of persons married of 0.28 on the persons married rate The
marriage rate varied during the year from 14.12 persons per 1,000 inhabitants
in the first quarter to 21.31 in the third quarter. The number of persons who
were married and the rate in the second quarter were 1,256 and 15.31 per
1,000 respectively, and in the fourth quarter 1,578 persons married, and a
rate of 19.24 per 1,000
The year 1910 brought to a conclusion the decennial period, in which it
will be noticed in Table IV that there were 29,433 marriages, or 58,866
persons married, and the rate, therefore was 17.76 per 1,000 of the population
In Table IV will be found a statement which gives the marriage rates for the
Borough since 1841 in decennial periods, in which it is noteworthy that in
the decennial periods 1851 to 1860, 1861 to 1870, 1871 to 1880 and 1891 to
1900 the marriage rate was practically fixed, only varying from 17.06 to
17.96 Curiously enough, for reasons which it is difficult to explain, from 1881
to 1890 the rate fell to 15.55, while in the ten years just completed, 1901-1910,
it rose to 17.76 It is puzzling to understand how an increase in the marriage
rate is coincident with a decline which is considered to have taken place in
the trade and commerce of the borough, and with a decrease which has
actually occurred in the population
