ON THE SANITARY CONDITION OF
Upon the basis of the estimated population already referred to,
the death.rate for 1898 is 21.43 per thousand persons as compared
with 23.20 per thousand, the average rate for the preceding
seven years. The death.rates in the four quarters were as
follows:—
1st Quarter. 2nd Quarter. 3rd Quarter. 4th Quarter.

Strand 24.75 21.80 20.49 18.68
The London rate for the year was 18.3, being 0.9 per 1,000
below the average of the preceding seven years.
