As shown in Table II, 1,450 notifications of births were received by
the department in 1938 as compared with 1,488 in 1937. Of the total
notifications, 243 were sent by midwives.
The following table shows the number of male and female children
born since 1922, and those who did not survive the first year of life, with
the number of the surviving children at the end of the first year of life:—
