8. Hospitals.—A list of hospitals in the City is set out below. The
City Council being a Metropolitan Sanitary Authority has no hospitals
under its Control. The authority for public hospitals in the London
area is the London County Council. The only public hospital in the City
is the Sheffield Street Hospital, a maternity Hospital for women suffering
from venereal disease. Two other hospitals which are neither public nor
voluntary are Queen Alexandra Military Hospital, Millbank, for soldiers
serving in the Forces, and King Edward VII Hospital for Officers,
Grosvenor Crescent.
There are, however, 13 voluntary hospitals in the City, a greater
concentration than can be found anywhere else in London, or perhaps in
the whole country. Nine of these are special hospitals devoted to the
treatment of particular conditions.
The Ministry ask in what proportion these hospitals are used by patients
residing outside the City. These voluntary hospitals are well-known
throughout the country, almost all have teaching schools in connection, and
they are used by patients coming from beyond the confines of London.
It would be a safe computation to estimate that between 80 and 90 per
cent, of the patients attending reside outside the City of Westminster.
