for reconstruction on a town-planning scheme. The leases of houses in
other parts of the City belonging to the same estate are expiring shortly,
and many of the sites are suitable for the erection of an improved type
of house.
The power to increase rents has enabled landlords to spend more on the
upkeep of their property, but in several instances the security of tenure
which is given to a tenant has operated detrimentally and landlords have
been unable to turn out tenants who are dirty and destructive.
With regard to the remedying of defects found on inspection, notices
were served under the Public Health (London) Act, and not under the
Housing Act. No action was taken under Sections 17, 18 or 28 of that
Act. The figures as to defects found are given in the table above.
