(statutory and voluntary) of the City have been brought into harmonious
co-operation. A summary of the means available is appended.
Educational Training in Sanatorium.—In 1910 the Council resolved
to engage for twelve months as on and from Lady Day four beds, two
at the Maitland Sanatorium, at Peppard Common, Oxfordshire, and the
remaining two, as opportunity offered, either at the Maitland Sanatorium
or at some other approved Sanatorium, as might be most convenient for
the use of phthisical patients from Westminster at a cost not exceeding
30s. per bed per week, and that the period of treatment be for one
month, subject to extension at the discretion of the Medical Officer of
Health in such cases as he may think fit. The Council further decided
to continue the arrangement for a further period of twelve months, and
included £350 in their financial estimates for the year 1911-12, for this
purpose. Twenty-one patients were sent by the City Council for
educational training during the year, 15 (10 males, 5 females) of
these went to Maitland Sanatorium, at Peppard Common, Oxfordshire,
and 5 (3 males, 2 females) to Fairlight Sanatorium, Hastings. The
beds were occupied for a total period of 151 weeks, at a cost of about
£235, inclusive of travelling expenses, sputum flasks, &c.
Bacteriological Examination of Sputum.—Seventy-seven examinations
were made of sputum, from 75 patients, to ascertain if the tubercle
bacillus was present; it was found in 17 instances.
Disinfection.—Three hundred and ten rooms in 234 houses and
3,592 articles were disinfected or destroyed by the Council's staff, after
death, or on removal of patients from one house to another, or to
hospital. In 37 other cases, disinfection (or thorough cleaning and
re-decoration of rooms) was carried out privately.
