In the various wards (as shown on the next page) there has been
a reduction, with the exception of the Hamlet of Knightsbridge,
in which there has been an increase of 91. The greatest reduction has
been in the wards comprised in the Strand Borough, the Strand Ward
being reduced to less than half of its former sleeping population.
The reliability of the figures is affected by the fact that the Census
was taken on a Sunday. The habit of leaving London for the weekends
is one which has grown considerably, and particularly affects
Westminster, and especially certain wards. In the report on the
1871 Census, this was noted as a reason for the decrease in parts of
St. George, Hanover Square; it now applies in many other parts of the
City.
