Infantile Mortality.—The uncorrected death rate of infants for Westminster
was 115 deaths per 1,000 births registered in the City, against
a rate of 130, the average of the previous ten years.
The corrected rate works out at 102.9, the average of the previous
five years having been 98.5, and of the ten years, 1901-10, 110. On
deducting the births and deaths of illegitimate children, among whom
the mortality is always high, it will be seen below that the infant deathrate
among legitimate infants was 125 per 1,000 births in 1902, and fell
gradually to 91 in 1909; in 1910 there was a large fall to 78, but for
1911, the rate has gone up again to 91.
Figures for both births and deaths of infants corrected, showing the
true rate in each of the last ten years are given on the next page.
