In the southern half the majority of the inhabitants are of British
nationality, and the figures relating thereto are to be found in Table A.
Deaths.
2,164 deaths were registered in the City in the 52 weeks ending the
1st January, 1911. After deducting 1,023 deaths of non-citizens in
public institutions in the City, and adding those of 750 citizens who died
in other districts, the corrected total is 1,891, and is equivalent to
an annual rate of 11.0 per 1,000 persons. The average death-rate for
the years 1901-9 was 13.6. The London death-rate for 1910 was 12.75,
the average for the previous five years being 145, and for England and
Wales 13.4, the lowest rate on record (see Table VI), being 1.1 below the
1909 rate and 2.4 below the average rate of the previous ten years.
Tables VI to XIII show the vital statistics of the City and five
groups of districts from 1891 to 1910.

Cause of death at all Ages.—These are set forth in Table VIII, and
also their distribution in the various Wards of the City.
Deaths were fewer from nearly all causes than in 1909, the exceptions
being diseases of the digestive system, including diarrhoea, diseases of
the heart and blood vessels ; suicides were also more numerous.
Ages at Death.—Deaths were fewer at every age period and in each
ward except the Strand, which was increased by 6 by deaths of homeless
per3ons admitted to Infirmaries through the casual wards. Of the total deaths, 214 were those of children under 1 year of age, and 654 of persons over 65 years of age; these are referable to the various wards as follows:—
