STATISTICS FOR THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE
YEAR 1903.
From the Returns of the Registrar-General for the First Quarter of the year, I have
extracted the Birth and Death Rates of London as a whole, in order to compare them with
those of the City of Westminster.
Births.—The Births registered in London were equal to an annual rate of 29.0 per 1,000
of the population; this is 21 per 1,000 below the average rate in the First Quarters of the
preceding ten years. The births registered in the City of Westminster were 718, equal to
an annual rate of 16.0. A number of births take place in institutions beyond the borders of
the City, which should be added to obtain the correct rate.
Deaths.—The deaths in London, after distribution of those occurring in public institu*
tions, were equal to an annual rate of J 6.7 per 1,000, being 3 per 1,000 below the rate in
the corresponding Quarters of the ten preceding years.
In the City of Westminster 671 deaths were registered ; after deducting the deaths of
247 non-citizens in public institutions in the City, and adding those of 259 citizens who died
in other districts, the corrected total is 683, equal to an annual death-rate of 15.2 per 1,000
as against 18*0 and 209 in the corresponding Quarters of 1901 and 1902, respectively.
